A Legacy Built Over Time

Tracing our roots and the foundation of excellence.

Sreepur Government College, located in Sreepur, Gazipur, stands as a beacon of education and community progress in Bangladesh. Established in 1968 as Sreepur College, it began with humble tin-shed classrooms and a small group of dedicated teachers. Over the years, it has evolved into a government institution that now serves more than 13,000 students annually. The college's journey reflects resilience, beginning as a community-led initiative, surviving the Liberation War of 1971, and expanding into degree and postgraduate programs. Its development included major milestones such as launching honours courses, undergoing renaming to honor a freedom fighter, and finally nationalization in 2018. Today, it symbolizes knowledge, heritage, and opportunity, providing education that empowers individuals and strengthens society in Sreepur.

Introduction

Founded in 1968 by education enthusiasts, Sreepur College was initially housed in tin-shed structures on donated land, thanks to local benefactor Kalu Mondal. During the Liberation War of 1971, the college campus became a tragic execution ground, with hundreds massacred by the Pakistani army, leaving a lasting scar in history. After independence, the college rebuilt its mission, introducing degree programs in the early 2000s and honours courses by 2010. With growth, it was renamed Sreepur Degree University College, later changed in 2013 to Sreepur Muktijoddha Rahmat Ali College, honoring freedom fighter and MP Rahmat Ali. The renaming caused protests but remained official. In 2018, it was nationalized, officially becoming Sreepur Government College, securing full state ownership and academic recognition.

Early Beginnings

Sreepur Government College now offers a broad academic spectrum, including higher secondary, degree, honours and masters programs under the National University. It enrolls over 13,000 students in science, humanities, commerce, and postgraduate studies. Modern facilities include laboratories, hostels, library, cultural clubs, and a Bangladesh Open University study center. Alumni serve in diverse fields-education, government, business reflecting its long-standing social contribution. The campus, with its Liberation War memorial, stands as both an educational hub and a site of remembrance. The future promises continued academic expansion, infrastructural development, and preservation of heritage. As a government college, it carries forward a legacy of sacrifice, resilience, and community pride, symbolizing opportunity and progress for generations in Gazipur and beyond.
